South Fork Wind Project Completed – 12 New Offshore Turbines in the U.S.

Offshore wind project completed off the west coast

Wind energy is making big moves in America’s push for green energy. Leading the way, the South Fork Wind farm is located off the coast of Rhode Island. Created by Ørsted and Eversource, this project is the first big offshore wind farm in the U.S. that’s completely up and running. It can power about 70,000 homes on Long Island with its 12 turbines. At full power, this farm can make 132 megawatts of electricity, which is the equivalent of taking 60,000 cars off the road for the next 20 years.

This wind farm is also a big step for New York, meeting its goals for more renewable energy. New York wants to use a lot more clean energy by 2030 and plans to build more wind farms by 2035. Construction on South Fork Wind started in 2022 and put in the last windmill in February 2024. This shows New York’s big commitment to using renewable energy.

But this project is about more than just clean energy—it’s also boosting the economy and creating jobs. While building the South Fork Wind farm, hundreds of American workers and three ports in the Northeast were busy setting up a new system for making and delivering parts in the U.S., and they created jobs for people in local unions. Workers in Connecticut and Rhode Island helped build it, and workers from New York also helped finish the project. The South Fork Wind project helped start a new industry in the U.S. for offshore wind energy.

“Every day, the Interior Department is answering President Biden’s call and moving rapidly to create a robust and sustainable clean energy economy that creates jobs, boosts local economies and helps address environmental justice. We’re thrilled to celebrate the completion of the South Fork project, which will deliver 130 megawatts of wind energy to Long Island. That’s enough to power more than 70,000 homes and businesses! Today is further proof that America’s clean energy transition is not a dream for a distant future – it’s happening right here and now.”

U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Deb Haaland

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that the ocean around America and the Great Lakes could make over 4,000 gigawatts of energy every year from wind farms in the water. That’s roughly three times more electricity than what we use in a whole year. This shows how big of a role offshore wind could have in the future of giving America the energy it needs.

The U.S. Department of Energy and other government groups are really pushing offshore wind with special funding, research, and projects like the Offshore Wind Center of Excellence. These efforts aim to build a lasting industry for offshore wind, making sure it keeps growing despite past problems.

As the offshore wind industry moves forward, it’s clear that projects like South Fork Wind aren’t just about making clean energy; they’re also about setting the foundation for a greener, more sustainable future and showing the huge potential of offshore wind for America’s energy plans.
