Northwest Renewable Energy Institute – New Climb Training Tower

Vancouver, WA – In a significant step towards advancing renewable energy education in the PNW, the Northwest Renewable Energy Institute (NWREI) recently celebrated the opening of its new climb training tower in Vancouver, WA. This event highlights a milestone in NWREI’s ongoing effort to deliver comprehensive training for those interested in pursuing careers as wind turbine technicians.

A Soaring Start

The ribbon-cutting ceremony, covered by Fox 12 Oregon, showcased the new training facility that features a 20-foot ENSA-endorsed climbing tower. This indoor facility, part of NWREI’s satellite campus on Fruit Valley Road, is designed to simulate real-world wind turbine scenarios, including a main shaft, hub, nosecone, and over-the-edge evacuation simulator.

Bridging Theory and Practice

Thomas Baurus, a seasoned instructor at NWREI, emphasized the importance of practical experience in training. “Our aim has always been to provide a genuine, hands-on experience,” he stated. The new campus aligns perfectly with NWREI’s philosophy of blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills to provide students with valuable training required by the industry.

Safety and Skills at the Forefront

Safety is paramount at NWREI. The climbing tower is integrated with advanced safety mechanisms such as Self Retracting Devices (SRD), robust safety netting, guardrails, and Safety Retract Lines (SRL). Sam Ray, another respected instructor at NWREI, highlighted that the curriculum goes beyond climbing techniques, encompassing vital rescue operations and advanced first aid training.

An Eye on Global Standards

Aligning with Global Wind Organization (GWO) standards, NWREI is steadfast in its journey towards becoming a GWO-certified provider. DJ Schmidt, president of the International Air & Hospitality Academy, stated, “We are pioneering the future of renewable energy. This modernized campus symbolizes our unwavering dedication to cultivating skilled, cautious, and professional wind turbine technicians.”

Community Engagement and Demonstrations

The event, hosted by the International Air and Hospitality Academy, featured food served by students and instructors from the Northwest Culinary Institute. Notable attendees included representatives from the Greater Chamber of Vancouver, Port of Vancouver USA, Vestas, and other enthusiastic supporters of NWREI’s evolution. Throughout the event, NWREI students and instructors actively engaged with attendees, providing demonstrations and sharing their experiences and aspirations in the wind energy sector.
